In the year 2001 the Town hall of Donostia-San approved the "Plan of promotion of the bicycle". Five years later it seems suitable to do a small balance of the situation.
The network has spread up to reaching 25 kilometers long solving problems of connection as essential as the stretch of the Conch. He has installed more than 3.500 squares for bicycles in the street. From the year 2000 the number of users of the network has been trebled.
Nevertheless any of the stretches foreseen for the first stage of development of the network they have not been realized yet, especially the connections to the east in the axis Gros-Intxaurrondo.
The increase of the use of the bicycle is something tangible in the scenery donostiarra. Nevertheless, an alone important percentage of the new cyclists goes along in the bicycle along reserved routes or along sidewalks and pedestrian areas. The above mentioned it causes discomfort and risks for the pedestrian in addition to an invasion of the sidewalks that are not conditioned for a cycle use.
In this sense it is suitable to keep on extending the network and to favor the coexistence of the bicycles with the motorized traffic, since there is not feasible the existence of segregated cycle network that gains access to most of the destinations of the municipal term.
