The bicycle: a medicine on wheels

The bicycle: a medicine on wheels

The Bicycle is a medicine on two wheels, although it is still still to discover in Spain.

It is verified clinically that it is one of the most finished and universal activities to prepare backaches, to protect joints and to improve the circulatory and immune system.

Nevertheless, only 31 % of the Spanish population practises this activity as the first study realized on the use of the bicycle in Spain.

Still for discovering in Spain

69 % of the Spanish population admits that it does not mount in bicycle, according to information of the first survey realized by Public opinion research of the use of the bicycle in Spain.

Of the third that goes in bicycle, 48 % admits to take the bicycle at least once a month and does it rather for fun to do moderate exercise. In contrast to other European countries as Sweden and Germany where the climatic conditions are not so favorable as in Spain, the use of the bicycle is almost three times top with a percentage of use of 73 and 79 per cent, respectively. Even in Spain the regions that there has a major number of users of bicycle are those of the north center (44,3 %) - Navarre, La Rioja, Basque Country and Cantabria - and Asturias and Gallicia (35 %) in contrast to Madrid (25,5 %) and Canaries (10,3 %) that have the lowest users levels.

More than the half (57 %) of the polled Spanish would use more the bicycle if they knew that the practice of the cycling reverberates so positively in the well-being of the health - to lose weight, to be supported in form, to diminish the cholesterol levels, to support a healthy heart, to increase the capacity of the lungs and to avoid backaches and rigidity in the joints. - Nevertheless it is necessary to emphasize that 80 % of the population does not realize all these positive aspects that do of the bicycle one of the most finished and universal activities to obtain a physical and psychic well-being.

This survey was prepared by a sample representative of 1.000 Spanish at national level for Selle Royal, the Italian company manufacturer of saddles, who wants to demonstrate the multiple benefits of going in bicycle.

The first study on health and bicycle

The formless one "Health and Bicycle" deals in detail with the positive effects of going in bicycle on the joints, the back, as well as on the circulatory and immune system and represents the biggest study that till now has been carried out on the benefits of the bicycle for the health.

To mount in bicycle strengthens the body and the soul. This has been the result of this study published by the health Center of the German University of the Sport (DSHS) of the city of Cologne for the saddles factory Seal Royal. The German University of the Sport is one of most recognized on a global scale by his work in the investigation of the sports medicine and physiological studies of the sport.

"Who mounts in bicycle regularly, it saves itself you visit the doctor, medicines and, even very costly treatments. Although one does not begin doing exercise regularly up to an advanced age, the results are palpable. The persons who suffer the typical inconveniences of backache, excess weight and other cardiovascular diseases, might have a good time of many years of good health, if they were deciding to use more the bicycle," there comments Dr. Froböse, president of the health Center of DSHS and principal coordinator of this new study.

The analysis of these studies they demonstrate that the most common problems of health as for example, the inconveniences or backaches and the circulatory aberrations or of the heart they can get ready by means of the use of the bicycle.

Progress of the functions of the circulatory system

A balanced activity, since it is to go in bicycle, reduces the infarction risk in more than 50 %. As he tells the Prof. Froböse, "the cardiac rhythm increases and the low pressure, briefly: the heart works economizing. Practising this sport there diminishes the negative cholesterol, which is responsible for the calcification of the blood glasses. On the other hand, the quantity of positive cholesterol, which is responsible for the protection of the blood glasses, increases. Consequently the blood glasses increase his flexibility, the sedimentation of the badge appears with less frequency and diminishes the risk of a calcification of the arteries.

To mount in bicycle helps to prepare the cardiac mistakes, one of the principal causes that provoke every year 150.000 deaths."

Prevention of the backache

The back also benefits of going in bicycle. When the cyclist adopts the ideal position in the saddle with the torso lightly inclined ahead, the musculature of the back is under tension and stabilizes the trunk. The regular legs movements strengthen especially the lumbar area and prepare the appearance of a slipped disc.

Summing the information of the study up for the Teacher Froböse "The musculature of the back becomes stronger thanks to this sport and supports the spine protected from vibrations and blows." Finally, to go in bicycle also stimulates the small muscles of the back vertebrae, which across the exercises of traditional gymnastics only manage to be stimulated and tightened by a lot of effort. These benefits do of the cycling one of the ideal activities for the persons who suffer backache.

It protects the joints

To mount in bicycle is very profitable for the joints of the knees since 70-80 % of the weight of the body is muffled by the saddle. For this motive to go in bicycle is a good alternative to the jogging since the joints and the cartilages do not have to support this surcharge, as the Teacher Froböse has verified it. The cyclical movements that are realized on having pedalled represent a minimal load for the joints and guarantee an ideal sustenance situation for the cartilages. If the joints support few pressure, the energy and the nourishing substances can be spread with major facility by the cartilages.

Those who protect his joints mounting in bicycle regularly, prepare with it the risk of falling ill of artrosis and also they make sure that to walk and to run should not suppose a problem in the course of time.

Positive influences for the immune system

To practise the cycling regularly reverberates in a positive way in the immune system. The body of the cyclists detaches chemical compounds that improve the frame of mind and do that a well-being situation takes place. The phagocytes, the devouring cells of bacteria of the human body, are mobilized in an immediate way across the pedaleo, to annihilate bacteria and carcinogenic cells.

For this motive to go in bicycle is used like therapy for patients of cancer and AIDS. But also it extracts profit of this simple way of locomotion who wants, for prevention, to strengthen his body against infectious illnesses.

Small effort, big results

The study shows with proposals detailed how to a person that it usually mounts in bicycle exercises can be programmed to him, to obtain ideal results in his health. The duration and the frequency of the trajectories must fit according to the physical condition, the age and the results that want to be obtained.

Only 10 minutes of pedaleo they reverberate already in the musculature, the blood irrigation and the joints. From 30 minutes positive influences appear in the functions of the heart, and from 50 minutes the greasy metabolism is stimulated. The habitual cyclists can intensify significantly these results if they practise this sport with steadfastness during his free time.

This way a woman of between 45 and 60 years can increase three times the benefits in his immune system, if instead of 20 minutes, it mounts in bicycle 60 minutes a day. The cycling contributes incredible benefits for the health in a very little time; this phenomenon should facilitate to us the decision to dust our ancient bicycle.
